Ric’s Mediterranean Grill

Downtown Kamloops, BC

We almost never made it to Ric’s Mediterranean Grill in Downtown Kamloops due to the discovery of an explosive improvised device that caused a major part of the downtown core to be evacuated.  I will straight-up say that we are fans of this establishment, particularly the downtown location but tonight’s experience was totally underwhelming, making us wish that the downtown had remained evacuated and we would have proceeded to our alternate restaurant that we had made reservations in the event Ric’s Mediterranean Grill was a no-go.

We ordered a Crispy Calamari appetizer to share between the two of us.  The Calamari was supposed to have been coated with garlic and lemon pepper but it tasted very bland - flavorless.  It was inadequately seasoned and there was no sign of anything but a very thin flour coating on the Calamari.  It was so tasteless that it had us picking out the red onion pieces to give it any sort of taste to it.

In contrast, the BBQ Rubbed Stuffed Pork Chop was quite flavorful (but salty).  I was also quite pleased with the Surf and Turf, which contained a grilled skewer combination of grilled prawns and scallops, 6 oz sirloin steak and a 4 oz. of Nova Scotian Lobster Tail.   But I have to take exception to the size of the Lobster Tail meat that was presented above the empty Lobster shell - if it was supposed to be the meat that came from a 4 oz. piece of tail, part of the meat must have never returned to its tail after it too evacuated the premises due to the bomb situation.

I will leave the best for last because I still think this is one of the better franchise restaurants we have in Kamloops.  Like most businesses in the downtown core, this wasn’t a good night for them.  We loved the desserts - the cappucino pie and the ginger cake brought some satisfaction to our dining experience on this night.

As I stated in the beginning, our dining experience tonight was very underwhelming but we will give them the benefit of the doubt due to perhaps being ill-prepared as a result of the unfortunate event that closed down the restaurant earlier in the day.
